Today's workforce spans multiple generations of caregiving. Employees are raising young children, supporting ageing parents, or helping care for grandchildren - often juggling more than one of these roles at once, alongside their careers. Yet most workplace wellbeing policies are designed around a single life stage, leaving a gap between how organisations think about support and how employees actually live.
Professor Candice Harris (AUT) and Professor Jarrod Haar (Massey University) draw on their research into organisational support and work-life balance across NZ employees to challenge HR practitioners to rethink what genuine support looks like across the full caregiving lifecycle. How we support employees at every life stage will shape who stays and who thrives.
Questions this seminar could raise for HR practitioners:
• Do our leave and flexibility policies assume caregiving stops once children grow up?
• Are we tracking or even aware of how many of our older employees are also carers - for grandchildren, ageing parents, or both?
• Could broadening "family-friendly" policies help us retain experienced staff and address skills shortages?
• Are our wellbeing communications and initiatives implicitly speaking only to parents of young children?
• Do organisations adequately resource work-life balance support?
