You’re not alone. Many HR professionals feel unsure about whether they’re ready, how to structure their application, or how to find the time.
Charter Assist is here to help.
This service is designed to support eligible members through the Chartering process, offering tailored, one-on-one guidance from an HR professional who understands what assessors are looking for. From clarifying requirements to reviewing your CV and prepping for your interview, we’ll guide you every step of the way.
What is Charter Assist?
Charter Assist is a personalised support service designed to guide eligible HR professionals through the Chartered Member application. You’ll receive up to 4 hours of expert assistance from an experienced HRNZ coach to help you:
Understand what’s required at each step
Support to complete the HRNZ self-assessment for accreditation
Develop an executive summary of your experience to support your application
Effectively select and brief your referees
If you are not ready to become Chartered, your HRNZ coach will offer support for up to 12 months, including setting high level development goals, to help you become Chartership-ready.

Meet Our Charter Assist Coaches
Our Charter Assist Coaches are experienced HR professionals who support candidates through the Charter Assist programme. Drawing on their knowledge of the Chartered Membership requirements and assessment process, they help candidates reflect on their experience, identify development opportunities, and prepare for assessment.
Michele Walls
Michele Walls is an experienced HRNZ Charter Assist Coach with a passion for supporting HR professionals to grow their capability, confidence, and professional impact.
With over 20 years' experience in leadership, recruitment, talent, and organisational development, Michele has worked across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. She has partnered with leaders, executives, board members, and professionals at all stages of their careers, providing guidance on leadership, career development, change, governance, and professional growth.
Michele brings a practical, supportive, and strengths-based approach to coaching, drawing on her extensive experience leading businesses, advising organisations, and mentoring emerging and experienced professionals. In addition to her work with Charter Assist candidates, Michele is a long-serving HRNZ Awards judge, governance mentor, and community volunteer.
Chelsea Mapp
Chelsea Mapp is the Professional Accreditation Manager at HRNZ and a Charter Assist Coach, supporting HR professionals to develop their capability, confidence, and progress on their pathway to Chartered Membership.
With HR experience across New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom, Chelsea is a true HR generalist with expertise spanning employee relations, organisational development, learning and development, talent management, and professional accreditation. Through her work at HRNZ, she supports HR practitioners at all stages of their careers to connect their experience to The Path and identify opportunities for professional growth.
As a Charter Assist Coach, Chelsea helps candidates understand the Chartered assessment process and connect their experience to The Path. Her approach is practical, encouraging, and focused on confidence.
Tania Gough
Tania Gough is an experienced HRNZ Charter Assist Coach with more than 25 years' experience in human resources, organisational development, leadership development, and consultancy across New Zealand's public and private sectors.
Her expertise includes individual coaching, leadership development, team effectiveness, workplace problem solving, strategic HR consultancy, and HR framework design. Tania has facilitated leadership programmes at Outward Bound New Zealand for the past 20 years, including Women in Leadership programmes. Tania’s passion area is about helping the different generations in the workplace value each other and work effectively together for more productive outcomes.
Tania brings a practical, supportive, and strengths-based approach. She is committed to helping HR professionals grow their professional impact and successfully navigate their Chartered Membership journey.

Maintaining rigorous standards
Charter Assist is not a shortcut to Chartered Membership.
All applicants must still meet the same rigorous standards, including:
- Completing the self-assessment
- Passing the Chartered Member assessment interview
- Completing the Te Ao Māori and Code of Practice modules
- Meeting the required CPD points
Charter Assist simply helps you prepare as best you can for the chartering process.
