Making the leap from university into your first HR job? Curious about what hiring managers are really looking for in graduates? This free one-hour webinar is designed for final-year students and recent HR graduates who want to go beyond academic knowledge and build the practical skills employers expect.
This webinar features an experienced people and culture professional with a background in HR consulting, an executive general people manager with experience across multiple HR areas, and a recent HR graduate. They will share honest insights on what really matters when entering the field. The recent HR graduate will also share her personal journey, including how she landed her first role, what set her apart during the process, and the lessons she wishes she had learned earlier.
You’ll then gain insight into what experienced HR professionals look for in graduate applications and interviews, how they recognise potential in candidates without formal experience, and the missteps that often weaken an application.
This webinar will help you understand the transition, build your confidence, and equip you with practical guidance to take your first steps into HR.

Poppy Fogarty – Recent Graduate
I grew up in Wellington and moved to Dunedin in 2021 to study at the University of Otago. I recently completed a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Human Resource Management and Marketing, with a minor in Psychology. My four years in Dunedin were an incredible experience. I made lifelong friendships and discovered a passion for HR. In my final year, I joined HRNZ and had the privilege of being the HRNZ Student Ambassador for Otago. This role provided me with valuable opportunities to network, collaborate with, and learn from experienced HR professionals, which deepened my understanding of the field. After graduating, I returned to Wellington and began my career as a Generalist Graduate at Z Energy. I'm really enjoying the experience. It’s been a great opportunity to apply my HR knowledge in a practical setting, while also stepping outside my comfort zone and exploring other areas of the business!
