David Cotter CMHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

HR is a second career for me after formative years in operations and sales roles. It’s my interest and further study in strategy, organisation, and team development that brought me to HR.

What do you love about working in HR?

It’s dynamic and often days are unpredictable, so work keeps me stimulated. I enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to impact organisational culture in the pursuit of strategic business outcomes. The symbiosis of the employment relationship and the development of a healthy and productive workplace is rewarding to be part of. Using HR technology to provide data insights and collaborate as a business partner and organisation leader provides deep operational understanding.

Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?

The people I have met and the places I have gone within my HR career are highlights ahead of any particular project or achievement.

What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member?

Chartered Membership is an important component of continually advancing professional capability; I’m really pleased to be able to achieve and contribute to that.

What motivated you to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

It’s was a logical step to support the professional body and demonstrate commitment to growth and development while also providing me peer review and recognition.

What are your next steps in terms of your career now that you are a Chartered Member?

I’m keen to work with emerging professionals to develop their careers. I’m also completing a Masters Degree of Change and Organisational Resilience.
