Become a Chartered Member as an Academic
Chartership Process for Academic Members
Academic Members have a slightly different Chartership process, with requirements tailored to their style of work and experience.
As an Academic Member, you can ratify your expert HR knowledge by becoming Chartered. We're committed to making the process as straightforward as possible.
How to Apply as an Academic Member
The application process does not require further study or for you to take an exam. HRNZ will review your application and if you don't meet any of the requirements, you will be sent feedback on the areas you need to strengthen and be invited to reapply. Apply in 5 easy steps:
1. Complete the Academic Chartered Membership application form
Please make sure all sections of this form are completed. This includes agreeing to the HRNZ Charter and certifying your application.
2. Update your CV to send alongside your application form
Update and attach your full CV with your application. This should include your teaching experience and list of publications, your highest academic qualification, and at least three relevant teaching evaluations (you may choose a mix of student and peer evaluations, or other relevant evaluations).
3. Provide evidence
Provide evidence of highest qualification and three teaching evaluations.
4. HRNZ will verify your experience
HRNZ will verify your experience through personally nominated referees that are required as part of the application form.
- Provide details for two referees, including one from a Chartered member of HRNZ (academics and/or practitioners). We require their names, job titles, positions and email addresses
- Your referees will receive an online reference template via email to complete
5. Submit your application
Once you are ready to apply, please send your completed application form and all supporting documents to [email protected].

The Assessment Process
Once you have submitted your application:
- You’ll receive an acknowledgement of your Application with expected assessment timeframes
- HRNZ will contact your referees to validate the information you have supplied
- You will be interviewed by 2 members of the assessment panel to confirm that you meet the requirements of Chartered Membership.
Outcome
After your assessment, you will be advised on the outcome of your Chartered Membership application.
- If successful, you will be accredited as a Chartered Member (Academic) and provided with guidance on how to maintain your status.
- If you are not successful, you will receive feedback on which areas you need to strengthen. This process does not end in a pass or fail; we support you to reach the capabilities required to become Chartered.
