Vanessa Slater APHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

Throughout my career, I’ve had a strong desire to influence positive outcomes for both people and organisations, while staying true to my values and helping others and supporting their success. That drive led me to pursue a career in HR – a profession where I can make a real difference by enabling growth, guiding people through challenges, and contribute to meaningful organisational outcomes.

Along the journey to date, I’ve been fortunate to work with inspiring leaders and gain experience in both HR and operational roles, shaping the well-rounded perspective I bring to my work today.

What do you love about working in HR?

HR offers a unique opportunity to shape people’s experience at work and support them to succeed. I love partnering across the business to create meaningful, people-centred outcomes.

It’s rewarding to see someone grow through coaching or support, and I enjoy contributing to initiatives that make workplaces safer, more inclusive, and more empowering. I also value the mix of people-focused work and strategic thinking that HR offers.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?

I’m proud of the breadth of experience I’ve gained across both HR and operational roles. It’s given me a strong appreciation for how HR can influence culture, enable leadership, and support high-performing, safe workplaces where everyone can thrive. I’ve also been proud to contribute to strategic projects, change initiatives, and be someone others trust for support and advice.

What are your thoughts on the Accredited Professional Member process?

I found the process both affirming and valuable. It prompted deep reflection on my journey so far and acknowledged the depth of experience I’ve built to date. It also gave me clarity on where I want to grow next and strengthened my confidence that I’m on the right path.

Do you plan to now work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Absolutely. Becoming a Chartered Member is the next natural step for me and is a way to keep challenging myself and demonstrate my ongoing commitment to the profession and growth.

What are your next steps in terms of your career?

I’m committed to continuous learning and want to keep building my capability so I can shape strategy and drive meaningful outcomes for organisations and their people. While I have a strong generalist  background and enjoy working in this space, I’m focused on developing deeper expertise in organisational development and strategic HR to help realise this ambition.
