Quinn Ramsay APHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

Throughout my college years, I worked in a range of part-time roles that allowed me to engage with people from all walks of life and hear their unique stories. These experiences taught me the importance of individuality in the workplace and highlighted how diverse perspectives strengthen teams. They also sparked a genuine curiosity about what motivates employees and how organisations can foster engagement, growth, and retention.

Going into university, I knew I wanted a job involving people, but it wasn’t until I completed my first HR paper that I discovered my passion for HR. The more I learned, the more I realised how crucial HR is in shaping organisational culture and driving success. From recruitment and onboarding to employee relations and diversity and inclusion, HR offers everything a people-focused person like me needs to thrive.

What excites me most about working in HR is its forever changing working environment with no two days being the same. Each challenge requires its own unique touch. For me, HR is not just about policies and processes; it’s about building meaningful connections and creating workplaces where everyone can thrive.

What do you love about working in HR?

I thrive in a fast-paced environment where I’m constantly engaging with people and adapting to new challenges. This dynamic setting motivated me, as every day brings fresh opportunities to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact working for others. What I find most fulfilling about HR is the ability to guide managers and team leaders through complex situations helping them navigate tricky issues with confidence and achieve outcomes that strengthen both their teams and the wider business. For me, this is where HR adds value to a business.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?

I’m proud of how I’ve embraced every challenge and opportunity presented to me. At the early stage of my career, the growth and skills I’ve gained have been significant. One achievement that stands out is being the 'sole HR' representative for a site of over 115 employees so early on into my HR career (I am 24).

In this role, I have:

  • Supported site-wide restructures.
  • Revitalised the Health & Safety Committee to enhance engagement and encourage active participation across all departments.
  • Developed and implemented a new Attendance Management Plan to address and reduce high absenteeism within key areas of the business.

What are your thoughts on the Accredited Professional Member process?

I really wish that I did it sooner, it was a very clear and easy process to complete! I would strongly recommend if anyone were contemplating whether to complete it you should do it!

Do you plan to now work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Yes of course, but later into my career.

What are your next steps in terms of your career?

My next steps are to continue to develop and grow daily and to take every opportunity that presents itself to me and to expand my knowledge in all aspects of HR.
