Olivia McBain APHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

I transitioned into HR after leaving my role as a flight attendant. I realised how much I enjoyed working with people and understanding what motivates them, which naturally led me to a career focused on people and workplace dynamics. I also decided to take up study through Massey University (Bachelor of Arts majoring in Business Psychology) to help complement this.

What do you love about working in HR?

I love the variety and the opportunity to make a real impact, whether it's supporting someone through a tough situation or helping shape a positive workplace culture.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?

I'm proud of building strong, trusted relationships across the business and being seen as a go-to person for advice and support. That trust means a lot to me.

What are your thoughts on the Accredited Professional Member process?

I think it's a great way to reflect on your experience and growth, and to benchmark yourself against industry standards.

Do you plan to now work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Yes, that’s definitely something I’m aiming for as I continue to build my capability and experience.

What are your next steps in terms of your career?

I’m focused on deepening my expertise and eventually stepping into a more strategic HR role. Proving to myself that I can grow into an HR manager, hopefully one day soon.
