The opportunity - Te āheinga

We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate and proactive Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Advisor to join our Risk, Safety and Wellbeing team at New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) on a permanent, full-time basis.

In this pivotal role, you'll play a key part in supporting and enhancing NPDC's commitment to a safe, healthy, and thriving workplace. You'll provide expert advice, contribute to the implementation of strategic health, safety and wellbeing objectives, and champion initiatives that promote a culture of hauora and continuous improvement.

As our HSW Advisor, you'll ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, while actively fostering a positive and engaged safety culture across the organisation. Key responsibilities - Ngā haepapa matua:

  • Support the wider health and safety team in developing and implementing initiatives to assist the organisation manage its risks as agreed in key areas of responsibility
  • Provide legislative and best practice advice to all stakeholders
  • Assist in the education and training of staff in health, safety and wellness requirements, policies and procedures and their responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships across the business
  • Identify, assess and manage workplace hazards and risks in collaboration with business units. Conduct regular audits, inspections and learning teams
  • Actively ensure that good employer obligations and legislative requirements are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation

Essential skills and experience - Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification - degree or diploma or equivalent work related experience
  • Three years (minimum) experience in a similar advisory role
  • Able to challenge 'mental models' in a positive and constructive way, to drive change and new thinking in keeping with industry best practice
  • Certificate in incident investigation and/or risk management
  • Experience with ISO45001 or similar H and S management systems
  • Practical application and experience in safe workplace audits
  • Practical, outcome focussed with a proven ability to drive change and juggle multiple priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

You can expect to start in this permanent, full-time role with a salary of between $87,215 and $93,998.
