Title: Employment Relations Specialist
Reports to: Director
Location: Auckland (Remote)
Position Purpose
To provide expert, pragmatic employment relations support to small business clients—resolving issues swiftly, guiding preventative strategies, and mentoring HR consultants to ensure fair and legally sound outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver tailored ER advice to small business clients across a wide range of matters
- Lead support in a wide range of ER cases, including restructures, disciplinary and performance processes, and personal grievances,
- Drafting or reviewing documents and emails to support agreed ER approaches
- Step in during escalated cases to guide clients toward fair, pragmatic resolutions
- Prepare for and participate in mediation sessions, offering strategic and empathetic support
- Support and lead workplace investigations (holding a PI licence is ideal but not essential)
- Mentor generalist HR consultants to help them manage lower-level ER cases with confidence and peer review their work when required
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of NZ employment legislation and industry best practice
- Communicate ER advice and recommendations with clarity, accuracy, and professionalism.
Other:
- Comply with health and safety requirements for the workplace.
- Attend meetings as required via Microsoft Teams or in person.
- Perform other duties as reasonably required.
Role Requirements
- Significant experience in employment relations advisory
- Proven track record as an external consultant working across diverse client environments
- Experience supporting mediation and resolving personal grievances
- Investigations experience, ideally with a current Private Investigator licence
- Ability to work independently and adapt across various industries
- Strong judgement and communication skills with a pragmatic problem-solving approach
- Must be Auckland-based to enable travel to client sites when required
- Comfortable working remotely with a flexible schedule that can scale with demand.
Hours & Flexibility
Minimum commitment of 10 hours per week, with additional hours offered based on client needs. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys varied, impactful work and is available to respond to evolving ER demands.
