My Executive Career

  • I meandered through University and Graduated with a BA in History and Geography, a far cry from my initial thoughts of Law.
  • I joined IBM in 1978, initially selling office equipment and then graduating to large scale systems. Made IBM’s Executive Development fast track program and ultimately ran Public Sector for IBM
  • Joined Data General and became VP Marketing based in Singapore despite my partners desire to stay in NZ.
  • Returned to NZ as Managing Director of Unisys NZ…Led the transition from Hardware to Professional services and the people and cultural challenges that ensued.
  • Moved to Unisys HQ in Philadelphia..let a project to change the Go to Market model globally…received Pinnacle Award for Executive achievement. Significant leadership lessons
  • Led Unisys Global Telecommunications Business
  • My partner (Jane) advised I had run out of “brownie points”…she was completely over living overseas….and wanted to return to NZ….with the children…..with or without me.
  • Moved back to NZ as MD of Vodafone NZ 2001-2004. Grew the business from circa $550 mill to more than $1 billion by widening the applicability of mobile to Business Markets as well as consumer (the rise of mobile data).
  • Then despite Jane’s misgivings I became Managing Director and Executive Chair of Vodafone UK…major overhaul was required…people first. Then Group CTO (all networks and IT globally) for Vodafone PLC.
  • Returned to NZ for family reasons (illness of a child) late 2006.
  • Managing Director of PGG Wrightson during the GFC
  • Then became CEO of Geni/Spark Digital as we equipped Telecom NZ to compete as Spark in a digital world. Significant Cultural challenges, resigned 2016 (post another piece of “advice” from Jane).
