Tikanga Māori and Employment Law – Where Do They Meet?
The law might tell us what's lawful, but does that always mean it's tika?
As HR practitioners, we navigate complex people matters every day. But how often do we stop to consider the impact of our decisions on people's mana, relationships and sense of belonging?
Join us for an open and practical kōrero exploring where tikanga Māori and employment law meet, the place of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and what it means to be a good Te Tiriti partner through the way we practise HR.
Drawing on case law, lived experiences and practical examples, we'll explore how tikanga can shape our thinking, strengthen our practice and challenge us to approach people matters a little differently.
What will you take away?
• A greater understanding of the relationship between tikanga Māori, Te Tiriti and employment law.
• Practical ideas for bringing tikanga into everyday HR practice.
• Fresh perspectives on navigating complex people matters in ways that uphold mana and relationships.
• An opportunity to reflect on what meaningful Te Tiriti partnership looks like in your workplace.
Who is this kōrero for?
Anyone working in HR, People and Culture or employment relations, regardless of your familiarity with tikanga Māori.
Bring your curiosity, questions and whakaaro. This is a space to learn together, challenge our thinking and explore how we can do our mahi differently, and better.

Ana Fruean, Senior Strategic Leader Māori - Human Resources, University of Otago
Ana is an employment lawyer, HR leader and strategist who likes big ideas — but loves the detail, the ins and outs, and making it all work. As Senior Strategic Leader Māori at the University of Otago, she works across HR to strengthen Te Tiriti-led practice and bring Māori perspectives into the strategies, systems and decisions that shape people’s working lives. She enjoys joining dots, asking the questions that need asking, and challenging the occasional “but we’ve always done it this way.” Ana describes her superpower — and much of her mahi — simply as “fixing people problems.” She also continues to practise employment law with Kaupare Law — by Māori, for Māori, with Māori — and enjoys staying connected to the legal profession. Originally from the Bay of Islands and Auckland, Ana now calls Ōtepoti home. She is continuing her journey with te reo Māori, alongside a full life of whānau, four tamariki and community.
