What led you to a career in HR/the position that you are in currently?

I have a real interest in business and a passion for helping people, HR allows me to combine the two really well. Whilst studying at Otago university I was recommended by someone already in HR to take an HR paper, I did just that and the rest was history, my Degree at Otago allowed me to really dive into what HR does in an organisation and I think that really sparked my interest to pursue HR after I graduated.

What do you love about working in HR?

I love being able to watch individual transformations of our employees, it is really nice to see the life cycle of an employee and support them along their journey with us, I also enjoy the variety of work, no two days are the same, which is so much fun, HR is more strategic than people realise and I really enjoy being analytical and strategic in my approach to HR. Little things you implement in an HR space can have a large impact on the organisation which I feel can be extremely rewarding, HR is increasingly being recognised as more than just hiring and firing: it's about shaping the workplace culture, driving business goals and making a real difference in people's lives.

Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?

Becoming Chartered was pretty special, I think being able to make a difference in people's lives would be a highlight.

What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member?

I think it is really nice to be recognised in the HR Field, the process is great and really allows you a chance to reflect on what you have achieved and where your strengths lie. It also makes sure you are held accountable and committed to developing yourself within your HR career.

What motivated you to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Being a young HR professional, I was motivated to have the recognition of being chartered at this stage in my career. As a younger professional I believe it is important to demonstrate that my capability is not defined by my age or how long I have worked in the profession. It also motivated me to actually recognise the achievements I have already made, having to explain them and look back at what impact I have made was an important part of the journey for me.

What are your next steps in terms of your career now that you are a Chartered Member?

I want to continue to grow and learn whilst working HR, I want to ensure that I am developing and pushing myself to be the best I can be. Ensuring that my approach towards HR reflects who I am as a Chartered Member.
