Kirsten Whitworth CMHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/the position that you are in currently?

I hold a Bachelor of Commerce in Management, with a strong focus on Human Resources. Since completing my studies, I’ve worked across both the Human Resources and Travel industries. My passion for HR stems from a desire to help create workplace environments where people feel valued, supported, and genuinely enjoy coming to work. I believe HR plays a pivotal role in balancing the needs of both employees and the organisation, and I find great fulfilment in contributing to that alignment.

What do you love about working in HR?

Human Resources is a dynamic and ever-evolving field. I enjoy the variety it offers—no two days are the same, and the role requires adaptability and responsiveness. I particularly value the balance between strategic work, such as policy development, and the interpersonal aspects, like supporting individuals, advising leaders, and engaging with potential new team members. HR provides continuous learning opportunities, and I appreciate the chance to gain insights from diverse perspectives and experiences.

Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my recent career has been working in People and Culture within local government. This sector offers a wide range of opportunities for professional growth. Two particular highlights include participating in the Taituarā Management Challenge and becoming a Certified CliftonStrengths Coach. I’ve had the privilege of introducing the CliftonStrengths programme across our organisation, positively impacting over 200 employees. It’s incredibly fulfilling to support others in understanding their strengths and how they can work more effectively with others.

What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member?

I’m truly delighted to have achieved Chartered Member status. It represents a significant milestone in my HR career and serves as a meaningful recognition of the experience and contributions I’ve made to the profession.

What motivated you to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

After becoming an Accredited Professional, I was immediately motivated to pursue Chartered Membership. I took a proactive approach to identifying areas for development aligned with the required capabilities and worked steadily to build my experience. This journey has been both challenging and rewarding.

What are your next steps in terms of your career now that you are a Chartered Member?

I’m committed to continuing my professional growth within the People and Culture space. I’m currently involved in several exciting projects that are expanding my capabilities, and I look forward to further development opportunities through HRNZ. On a personal note, I’m especially excited to mentor my niece, who is about to graduate with an HR and psychology degree and has secured her first role in People and Culture.
