Becs Jory APHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR and the position that you are in currently?

I didn't set out with a specific plan to work in HR, but throughout my career I've always enjoyed working with people, solving problems, and finding ways to improve workplace experiences. As I gained more exposure to people-related matters, I realised HR was where I could combine those interests while making a positive difference for both employees and businesses. I'm currently an HR Advisor, where I support a wide range of HR activities, from employee relations and recruitment through to learning and development, wellbeing, and organisational initiatives. The variety and opportunity to work alongside people at all levels is what continues to make the role rewarding.

What do you love about working in HR?

The thing I love most about HR is the people. Every day is different, and no two situations are ever quite the same. I enjoy building relationships, supporting managers through challenges, and helping employees have positive experiences at work. Whether it's resolving a complex issue, helping someone develop in their career, or improving a process, it's rewarding knowing that the work we do can have a real impact on both individuals and the wider organisation.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?

Achieving APHRNZ accreditation is one of the achievements I'm most proud of. It was a chance to reflect on my career journey, recognise the experience I've gained, and receive professional recognition from HRNZ. I'm also proud of completing my Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and Graduate Certificate in Health & Safety Management.. Both qualifications have helped shape my approach and have given me a strong foundation across both HR and workplace wellbeing.

What was the experience of becoming an Accredited Professional Member like for you?

The process was both rewarding,  reassuring and very straight forward.  It gave me the opportunity to reflect on the work I've done, the skills I've developed, and the experiences that have shaped my career so far. Like many people, I probably underestimated my own achievements, so the accreditation process helped reinforce that I was contributing value and progressing professionally. Receiving APHRNZ status felt like an important milestone and gave me confidence in the experience I've built to date.

Do you plan to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Absolutely. Chartered Membership is something I would like to work towards as I continue to develop my career.

Where do you see you career heading from this point forwards?

I'm passionate about HR and see myself continuing to grow within the profession. I'd like to continue developing my knowledge across all areas of HR while taking on more strategic responsibilities over time. I don't think I'll ever stop learning, though. One of the things I enjoy most about HR is that there's always something new to learn, a new challenge to tackle, or another opportunity to make a positive difference.
